Olomouc in 1 day
From the station to the Upper Square, then up to the cathedral and down to the Lower Square, with a stop at noon for the clock, which runs no other time.

The whole visit fits into 1 day, because the old core is small and flat except for one climb. The plan starts at the station toward the Upper Square, lingers until noon for the clock's only daily show, climbs to the cathedral and comes back down to the quieter Lower Square, leaving time for a park and the local cheese before the train back.
Two squares, a cathedral and the noon clock
Arrival at the main station, direct train (ČD, RegioJet, Leo Express) from Prague, about 2 h 15. It's a short walk from the station into the old core.
The Upper Square (Horní náměstí). At its centre stands the Holy Trinity Column, free to view from outside. Beside it are three Baroque fountains — Hercules, Arion and Caesar — free.
Waiting by the Town Hall. The astronomical clock has only one show a day, performance once daily, at noon, so the rest of the morning is timed to be there for it.
The clock show, free. The face you're watching isn't medieval — it was rebuilt after wartime damage in a different, socialist-era style, but that's a story for the city page, not this plan.
Up to St Wenceslas Cathedral. Entry is free (church); €9 (tower climb), and climbing the tower needs timed slot (for the tower) in advance — without one booked, you see the tower from outside and move on.
Lunch in the old core. A set menu is €5–7, and for something more local, a potato pancake with tvarůžky is €9.22.
The Lower Square (Dolní náměstí). Down the street, with the fountains of Jupiter and Neptune, and fewer visitors than the Upper Square.
The Rosarium or Bezruč Gardens, both free. Half an hour among trees before the day's last stop.
Tvarůžky to taste or take away, €4.30 (plain) / €3.89 (fried). The cheese may only carry this name if it was made in Loštice, near the city.
Back towards the station. For anyone continuing rather than returning to Prague, the same line runs on towards Brno or across the border into Poland.

The Archdiocesan Museum is shut both days (Monday and Tuesday), so a longer break at the Rosarium or Bezruč Gardens takes its place in the plan.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can Olomouc be done in a single day?
Yes, 1 day covers both squares, the cathedral and the clock. Only Svatý Kopeček or one of the nearby day trips would need extra time.
What if you arrive after noon?
The clock show is off the table, since it only runs once a day, performance once daily, at noon. The rest of the plan still works, just in reverse order — the cathedral first, then the squares.
Does anything need booking ahead?
Only the cathedral tower climb, which runs on announced dates. Nothing else on this plan needs a reservation.
