Olomouc has no airport with scheduled flights, so the journey in is a two-step affair: Prague first, then the train. After that the whole question of city transport shrinks to a single choice, whether to ride the tram or walk from the station to the Upper Square. The answer depends on your luggage and on how far two kilometres feels after a flight.

From the airport to Olomouc

Prague is the gateway, and the way out of its airport is the Airport Express from Terminal 1 to Praha Hlavní nádraží, which takes about 45 minutes and costs €8.20 for a single ride. The 24-hour and 72-hour PID tickets are not valid on it, so the fare is separate even if you already hold one.

From the main station you continue on a direct train (ČD, RegioJet, Leo Express), and the ride takes about 2 h 15. Trains leave every hour and up to three times an hour in the rush. A one-way ticket costs about €10. Choose the carrier by the time on the board, because ČD, RegioJet and Leo Express all serve the line.

From the station into the centre

The town is small, but the station is not next to the old town. The Upper Square (Horní náměstí) lies about 2 km from the station in a straight line, which is roughly half an hour on foot. With a suitcase the walk feels longer than the number suggests.

The tram stop is called Hlavní nádraží, and the stop to get off at is U Sv. Mořice, close to the Upper Square. The bus station, Aut. nádraží, lies to the southeast of the core, so it too is some distance from the square. Building works near the station occasionally move the stops, and replacement buses marked X take over, so check dpmo.cz before you travel.

Tickets

App, SMS, paper

Tickets are valid for zone 71. They are sold in apps, among them the DPMO app, Elektronické jízdenky DPMO and MobilOK, at a machine, at a DPMO sales point or from contracted sellers. The SMS ticket works only with a Czech SIM card, since you send the message "DPMO" to 90206, and SMS and app tickets carry 10 extra minutes of validity.

You do not pay by card in the vehicle, because the validators there are not in operation. The Olomouc Region Card includes city transport, but if transport is all you need, DPMO says a regular 24-hour or 7-day ticket is usually cheaper.

Ticket and validityPrice
Single: valid 40 minutes on weekdays, 60 minutes on weekends and holidays€1.02
Single by SMS: Czech SIM card only, 10 extra minutes of validity€1.11
24 hours: valid 24 hours from the time on the ticket, not until midnight€3.69

Validate a paper ticket as you board; electronic and SMS tickets must be active before boarding. Children under 6 travel free.

Inside the core

All on foot

Both squares, the cathedral and the astronomical clock fit into a single walking loop, and the itinerary page lays that loop out. The tram is for luggage and for the station, and for nothing else. A room in the core means you hardly need a ticket after the first day, and the where-to-stay page covers which addresses allow that.

Beyond the city

By train

Day trips leave from the same station you arrived at. Short Leo Express trains run to Přerov, Hranice and Zábřeh, and the day trips page covers what each one offers. Prices and timings sit there, and this page stops at the platform.
