The best time to visit Larnaca
Spring and autumn for everything, summer for the sea with heat, winter for the flamingos
- Best months
- April–June, September–November
- Flamingos
- November–March, once the lake fills
- Kataklysmos
- 29 May–3 June 2026

July looks like the obvious month for Larnaca, and it is the month when its sights are least comfortable on foot. The sea stays warm into November and the flamingos arrive after that, while the months that suit a full day of walking are April–June and September–November. Each season below gets a paragraph, and the festival that shuts a street gets one more.
Through the year
Heat and the sea
The table above shows how heavy the afternoons get, so give the fort and the churches to the morning and the afternoon to the water. The sea is warmest in July and August, and swimming works until November, which makes the beach the one plan that does not depend on the month. The Salt Lake is the loser here. By midsummer it has dried into a white crust, and the flamingo photographs on every postcard belong to another season.

The months for sightseeing
September and October are the easy months, with the sea still warm and the days no longer punishing. The one catch is the clock, because from 16 September both the fort and Hala Sultan Tekke close at 5 pm, against 7:30 pm in summer, so an autumn day has to start earlier than it feels. Spring gives you the same walking weather, and its big event, Kataklysmos, comes at the very end of it.
Flamingos and shorter hours
From November to March the lake holds water, and the flamingos stand in the shallows feeding on tiny shrimps. If birds are the reason you came, winter is the only answer. The Church of Saint Lazarus keeps shorter hours, with a gap at midday between 12:30 and 2:30 pm, so plan the lake for the morning and the church for the afternoon. Walk to the western shore, where Hala Sultan Tekke stands with its minaret and palms above the water.
Kataklysmos
Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood, falls on the Monday after Orthodox Pentecost, so the date moves every year. In 2026 Larnaca held it from 29 May to 3 June, with the Monday on 1 June, entry was free, and Finikoudes was closed to traffic in the evenings. The promenade is the event, which means a room on it will be loud. Come for the crowd by the water, or pick another week if you want the seafront to yourself.
