Where to go: five more questions →

The mistakes that hurt in Larnaca are small ones, which is exactly why people keep making them. Five are worth knowing.

The bus after 9 pm

City buses run on the day fare until 9 pm and on a night fare from 9 pm to 4 am, which is €4.70 instead of €2.70 (cash, daytime). A late arrival at the airport or a long dinner on the promenade puts you in the dearer window without any warning. The fix is simple: plan the last ride before nine, or take a Bolt taxi, which is how people get around here since Uber does not operate. Taxis cost 15% more between 8:30 pm and 6 am, so the night fare on the bus is still the gentler of the two.

The lake in summer

The Salt Lake dries up in summer. A July morning on its shore gives you a white crust and a great deal of sun. Flamingos stand there from November to March, when the lake fills, and the walk around the shore is rewarding only then. If you are in town in the hot months, spend that morning at the Kamares Aqueduct, whose 75 arches are visible from the road to Limassol, and keep the lake for a winter trip.

Stavrovouni with the wrong group

Women are not admitted to the Stavrovouni monastery, and cameras are not allowed. A car of friends that includes a woman learns this at the gate. After the drive. The Church of All Saints in front of the fence is open to women, and a day in Lefkara makes a better swap for the whole group, since the village has its lace museum, which is free of charge, and no gate that turns anyone away.

Entering the island through the north

Arriving by Ercan airport or the ports of Famagusta and Karavostasi counts as illegal entry into the Republic of Cyprus, even when the flight itself was cheap and direct. The penalties include a fine, refused entry or exit, and a ban on returning to the north. The safe route is to land in Larnaca and cross the line later, on foot or by car, at one of the nine checkpoints. Crossing is open to everyone who entered the Republic through a legal crossing.

The Church of Saint Lazarus on a Sunday morning

Services on Sunday run from 6:30 am to 12:30 pm. In those hours the church is a place of worship first and a sight second, and you look in from outside. Come back after 3:30 pm, when it reopens to visitors, and the tomb beneath the altar is easy to see. Entry costs nothing. The saved hours go to the fort, which is a short walk along the promenade and has a museum on its upper floor.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

What is the most common mistake in Larnaca?

Riding the bus after 9 pm without knowing the fare has changed. The night fare is €4.70 against €2.70 (cash, daytime) by day.

Can you fly into the north and then cross to the south?

Landing at Ercan counts as illegal entry into the Republic of Cyprus, and so does arriving by the ports of Famagusta or Karavostasi. Land in the south first, and the crossings are open afterwards.

Do you need to cover your shoulders at Hala Sultan Tekke?

Yes, shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the entrance to the prayer space. The Tekke sometimes closes for pilgrims, as it did on a Tuesday in 2025, so a quick look at the day is sensible.
