The best time to visit Hvar
On most islands the date only changes the crowds and the price; on Hvar it also decides whether Tvrdalj is even open, and whether the boat to Vis is running at all.
- Best
- Jun · Sep
- Tvrdalj
- May–October
- Lavender
- Flowers late June and July

Jun · Sep keep the crowds down and the sea already warm, but the date here changes something more concrete too: Tvrdalj in Stari Grad runs May–October, closed outside that window. Fortica and the theatre with the arsenal, on the other hand, open daily, with no season at all.
June and September keep the crowds down
Jun · Sep. Through July and August the taxi boat to the Pakleni islands is at its busiest, and the bus between Hvar and Stari Grad runs most often — June and September give the same trip with less waiting on both.

Lavender in Velo Grablje
Lavender flowers in late June and July; the village festival falls in early July. It's the one date on the island that actually shapes a plan — outside that window, coming for the flowers loses its point.

Tvrdalj only opens half the year
May–October — outside that window the building is closed to visitors, with no advertised exception. The plain behind Stari Grad is still there off-season, but the summer house itself isn't open.

What runs all year
Fortica fortress and the theatre with the arsenal open daily, with no closed day and no season — the only difference off-season is fewer people on the steps up to the fortress and a quieter Pjaca in the evening.

Tvrdalj runs May–October; Fortica and the arsenal are open all year, with no closed day.
