Hvar splits across two days by the harbour that greets you: Jadrolinija catamaran, line 641 from Split docks in Hvar town, 1 h 05 for €25, so the first day belongs to the town and the Pakleni islands off its harbour. The second takes the bus to Stari Grad and the plain Greek settlers divided up in 384 BC.
Hvar town and the Pakleni islands
Arrival Split ferry port: Jadrolinija catamaran, line 641, 1 h 05 from Split for €25.
The Pjaca, St Stephen's Square (free), then the arsenal with the theatre upstairs: €10, daily 9–20.
The climb to Fortica fortress, fifteen to twenty minutes up steps: €12, daily 9–21.
Lunch in town before the afternoon boat: a main course with no drinks runs €17–27.
A taxi boat to the Pakleni islands from the town harbour, ten to fifteen minutes depending on the cove: €10–15 (taxi boat, return).
Back on the same taxi boat — check the last departure as soon as you land on the island, not on the beach.
Taxi boats to the Pakleni islands don't run on a fixed evening timetable — ask about the last departure the moment you land.

Stari Grad and the plain
A bus to Stari Grad, timed to ferry arrivals from Split.
Tvrdalj of Petar Hektorović, the fortified 16th-century summer house with a fishpond and inscriptions in three languages cut into the wall, costs €4 (pupils/students/pensioners €2) and opens May–October.
A walk across the plain behind town: plots divided up in 384 BC, still under vines and olives, UNESCO-listed since 2008 — the paths have almost no shade, so morning beats midday.
Lunch in Stari Grad, or a bus back to Hvar town.
The afternoon for whatever day one left out, or more of the plain if the morning felt short.
The plain has no trees along the paths — water and a hat go in the bag, not on a plan to buy them along the way.

Before you go

Do two days cover all of Hvar?

How do you get from Hvar town to Stari Grad?
By bus, timed to ferry arrivals from the mainland.
Do the fortress or the Pakleni islands need booking ahead?
No — neither Fortica nor the arsenal need a reservation; the taxi boat to the Pakleni islands is bought on the spot at the harbour.
