The best time to visit Linz
The date in Linz changes more than the river temperature — it decides whether the main museums are open at all, and how long the Mauthausen memorial stays open.

May–September, river and Pöstlingberg are the months when the Danube is for walking and the view from the Pöstlingberg is at its best. Outside that window the city still works. Two museums do keep a closing day of their own, though, and the Mauthausen memorial shortens its hours for winter instead of closing outright.
May–September, the river and the Pöstlingberg
May–September, river and Pöstlingberg. A walk along the Danube and the ride up the hill make the most sense in this window; outside it both are still possible, just colder and with fewer people on the terrace.

September also brings a festival
The Ars Electronica festival runs for five days in September. The city centre is busier then than the rest of the year, so anyone travelling on those exact days should expect more people around the Hauptplatz and the Ars Electronica Center.
Month by month
Average of daily averages by month, not the daily maximum or minimum; the second figure is days with measurable rain.

What keeps shorter hours off-season
The Ars Electronica Center and Lentos are both closed on the same day of the week, Monday; Lentos runs to 20:00 on Thursdays, 18:00 the rest of the week. From late October to the end of February Mauthausen switches to shorter winter hours, Mar–Oct daily 9:00–17:30; 27 Oct–28 Feb Tue–Sun 9:00–15:45.
