Linz in 1 day

Linz fits into a day without a car: the square, the museum across the river and the tram up the hill, in that order, while the train waits onward to Salzburg or back to Vienna.

Where to go: five more questions →

Linz is covered on foot and by tram, 1 day, between arriving and leaving the same day for Vienna or Salzburg. First the Hauptplatz and the Mariendom downtown, then the Ars Electronica Center across the bridge, then the tram up the Pöstlingberg towards the end of the afternoon.

Day 1

Linz, from the station to the Pöstlingberg

09:00

Arrival Linz airport (LNZ), then bus 601 to the Hauptbahnhof — about 22 min for €4.40 — to the Hauptbahnhof, then a tram down the Landstraße to the Hauptplatz.

10:00

The Hauptplatz, a thirteenth-century square with the Trinity Column — free, 30 min. Right beside it is the Mariendom, 30 min, free.

11:15

Over the Nibelungenbrücke to the Ars Electronica Center — €14, 2 h. Admission is valid for 24 hours of opening time, so a ticket bought now covers the next morning too.

13:30

Lunch at the Stiegl-Klosterhof: Erdäpfel-Cordon bleu €17 or a Bosna from a kiosk €5.40–6.10, with a beer €6.40.

15:00

The tram from the Hauptplatz up the Pöstlingberg, €9 for a return ticket — at the top are a baroque church and a terrace looking over the city.

17:00

Lentos on the south bank, on the way back towards the centre — €12, 1 h 30, Tue–Sun 10–18, Thu to 20.

18:30

Dinner in the old town, then back to the Hauptbahnhof for the onward train.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Is a car needed for this plan?

No. Everything fits into a tram ride and walking, €3.20 per ride or €6.40 for the whole day.

Does Mauthausen fit into this day?

No. The memorial needs half a day on its own, so it runs as a separate trip rather than an add-on to this plan.

What if the plan falls on a Monday?

The Ars Electronica Center and Lentos are both closed that day. The plan holds to the Hauptplatz, the Mariendom and the Pöstlingberg.
