Getting around Djerba

A short taxi ride from the airport, and around the flat island a taxi, a hired scooter or a bike — the town bus still has no confirmed fare.

Where to go: five more questions →

Almost everyone arrives by plane at Djerba–Zarzis airport, 15 min by taxi from Houmt Souk. Anyone coming from the mainland takes a louage across the Roman causeway. On the island itself, flat and small, a metered taxi covers short rides, and a scooter or bike covers a whole day.

1. Djerba–Zarzis airport

By taxi to your room

The airport is 15 min from Houmt Souk, taxi (metered or fixed price); a little further to the far end of the hotel zone. Metered, the ride runs around the lower end of the range, €3–7; a fixed price with an airport operator sits at the upper end of the same range.

2. From the mainland: a louage across the causeway

Anyone arriving by bus or louage from the mainland — from Medenine or further along the coast — crosses onto the island via the seven-kilometre Roman causeway, the only land entrance to Djerba.

3. On the island: taxi, scooter or bike

The island is flat and small, so it's easy to get around. A metered taxi covers rides to the beach and the market; anyone staying several days finds a scooter or bike, scooter €15–28/day, bike €15/day, works out cheaper than a string of short taxi rides and doesn't depend on a timetable. The town bus runs to the central station in Houmt Souk, but no source under a year old confirms the fare, so it isn't given here.

4. For the Sahara: a driver by the day

Matmata, Tataouine, Chenini and Ksar Ghilane aren't done by public transport — you go with a driver or on an organised tour, arranged in advance.
