Where to go: five more questions →

Where you sleep in Alicante decides whether you walk to the castle or ride a tram to the sand, and very few people need both. The old quarter suits a first visit, San Juan suits a beach week, and two quiet districts to the east suit everyone who finds the centre loud. Here is who each one fits.

El Barrio and Santa Cruz

The old quarter, El Barrio, climbs the slope under the castle in white façades and narrow cobbled lanes, with the Concatedral de San Nicolás at the foot. From a room here the castle, the harbour and Postiguet beach are all within reach on foot. The Basílica de Santa María, the oldest church in the city, stands on Calle Mayor, a few minutes from the Town Hall. Evenings suit it too, because the bars on Calle Labradores and Calle San Pascual in Santa Cruz are where people stay out after dinner, and the walk home is short. Choose it for a first visit, and ask for a room above the street rather than on it.

The centre, Calle del Teatro and Calle Castaños

The centre is the shopping and nightlife district. Calle del Teatro is the main shopping street, and Calle Castaños is the bar street. It is convenient for everything, but a room on Castaños at the weekend means a night with the window open to the bars, so take one a street back or choose another district. Anyone who plans to go out should sleep close, and anyone who wants sleep should not sleep on this street.

The Mercado area

Around the Mercado Central the quarter is residential, with many apartments and hostels and no luxury hotels. It is a reasonable base for a longer stay, because the market is at the door and a kitchen is easy to find. Choose it for flexibility and a morning at the stalls, since a grand hotel is not on offer here and a self-catering flat is. On Saturday it fills with people drinking vermouth in the afternoon, which is a local habit called tardeo, and on Sunday the hall itself is shut.

San Juan

The beach and the tram

San Juan lies about 10 km north-east of the centre and about 20 km from the airport. Its beach is roughly three kilometres of sand, and it has held a blue flag for 40 years running. Kayak and surf schools work from it, and TRAM line 3 stops at Costa Blanca station, with buses on top. The district suits a week of swimming, but it makes every evening in the old town a journey. For two days stay in El Barrio and walk to Postiguet, and for a week of beach days take San Juan and go into town on a tram when you want the castle.

Albufereta and Cabo de las Huertas

Albufereta is about 5 km east and quieter. A tram reaches the centre in about 15 minutes, the beach is 400 m long, and the Roman ruins of Lucentum at Tossal de Manises sit nearby. The beach carries no blue flag, because it did not apply in 2025 or 2026. Cabo de las Huertas, about 7 km east of the old town, is calmer still, with small coves such as Cala Cantalar and La Calita and a lookout, the Mirador de la Mussola. It has no luxury hotels and it needs transport.

What a night costs

A budget room averages about €60 a night, a mid-range one about €100 and a luxury one about €170. These averages come from a single source in August 2026, and winter rooms run cheaper. For a city stay of two days, put the money into the location and not into the class of hotel, since a mid-range room in El Barrio saves more time than a luxury one in Albufereta. Prices also move with the date, so read these as a middle of the road and not as a quote.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Which area is best for a first visit?

El Barrio and Santa Cruz. The castle, the harbour, the Concatedral and Postiguet beach are all on foot from there, and the old town bars are a few steps from the door.

Do you need a hotel near the beach?

Not in the centre, since Postiguet beach is a short walk from the old quarter. A hotel near the sand only pays off for San Juan, which is a separate district reached by tram or bus.

Is San Juan worth it without a car?

Yes, if the beach is the point of the trip. The TRAM line 3 and buses connect it to the centre, though evenings in the old town then mean a ride each way.
