Day trips from Košice

Gorges with ladders beside waterfalls, a medieval square under UNESCO protection and a regional city that fits into half a day. For each: whether it's worth it, how long it takes and how to get there.

Where to go: five more questions →

If you only have time for one trip, make it Slovak Paradise, a national park half an hour away by train, with ladders and trails past waterfalls through narrow gorges. Bardejov is further and different — a medieval square under UNESCO protection, not nature. Prešov is the closest of the three and fits into half a day, good when only an afternoon is left.

Slovak Paradise

Worth it, if you only pick one

The national park is entered near the settlement of Čingov, reached by train to Spišská Nová Ves, 57 min. Trails through the gorges run along metal ladders and footbridges past waterfalls, straight through the streambed — unusual even for a mountain park. The trip takes a full day, a return ticket is about €12 (2×€5.80).

Bardejov

Worth it, for a different picture than the gorges

Bardejov keeps its medieval square in near-untouched form, with town walls and wooden churches nearby, all on the UNESCO list. FlixBus runs there, 1 h 15 each way, a return ticket around about €11 (2×€5.48). The square, the walls and the icon museum take a full day.

Prešov

Closest, fits into half a day

Prešov is a regional centre with its own old core, square and Orthodox cathedral, but smaller and denser than Košice, so it's covered in half a day. The regional train takes 31 min, a return ticket about €6 (2×€2.90) — the cheapest of the three trips.
