Where to go: five more questions →

Outside the region itself there are two confirmed trips, each in a different direction: Zakopane, across the border in Poland, by bus straight from Starý Smokovec; and Levoča, a UNESCO-listed historic centre, by bus from Poprad. A third candidate, the Belianska jaskyňa cave, stays off the list until its transport fare is confirmed by an official source.

Zakopane

A full day across the border

The A15 bus line runs straight from Starý Smokovec to Zakopane, 1 h 18, ticket €7 (28 zł). The Polish side of the Tatras, its streets, market and mountain trails around town, is worth a full day.

Levoča

Half a day, with Spišský hrad on the way

A FlixBus service runs from Poprad to Levoča, 24–30 min, ticket about €7 (return). The town's historic centre is UNESCO-listed, with its medieval walls and square intact. A few kilometres further in the same direction stands Spišský hrad, one of the largest medieval castle complexes in Central Europe, with its own guide on the site for anyone stretching the trip further.

Košice

For anyone staying longer than a week, Košice is the next step further east, Slovakia's second-largest city and its own arrival hub by air, with its own guide on the site.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Do these two trips need a car?

No. Zakopane and Levoča both run by scheduled bus, no changes needed.

What is Spišský hrad?

One of the largest medieval castle complexes in Central Europe, a few kilometres from Levoča, with its own guide on the site.

Why isn't Belianska jaskyňa on the list?

The bus fare for that route hasn't been confirmed by an official carrier, only by aggregated search, which doesn't meet the site's standard.
