Where to go: five more questions →

The month in the High Tatras decides both the weather and which of the two reasons to come actually works: Jun–Sep for hiking; Dec–Mar for skiing. Between those two seasons, in spring, the cable cars to Lomnický štít and Skalnaté Pleso close for maintenance, spring maintenance, mid-Apr–May (e.g. 14 Apr–23 May 2025).

September12 °C, 13 rainy days
October7 °C, 8 rainy days
November1 °C, 10 rainy days
December-2 °C, 12 rainy days

If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

The table above tracks the temperature in the base. Lomnický štít stays colder and windier than Starý Smokovec even in summer, so add a margin for the higher ground. For hiking without snow on the trails, Jun–Sep for hiking; Dec–Mar for skiing names the summer window. The winter half of the same figure covers skiing.

Spring

The cable cars close for maintenance

Lomnický štít and Skalnaté Pleso both close for spring maintenance every year, spring maintenance, mid-Apr–May (e.g. 14 Apr–23 May 2025). The region is still worth visiting. Hrebienok, Štrbské Pleso and the TANAP trails all run; only the chain up to the highest reachable peak doesn't.

Summer against winter

Two different reasons

Hiking needs summer, with the trails to the waterfalls and lakes clear of snow. Skiing needs winter, when the resorts near Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica are running. Anyone arriving outside both windows still sees Hrebienok and Skalnaté Pleso, just without snow-free trails or skiing.
