The best time to visit Stara Planina
The same mountain runs two different trips — winter brings the chairlift and ski runs at Babin Zub, summer brings the climb to Midžor and waterfalls that stay hard to reach outside that window.
- Best
- Jun–Sep for hiking
- Coldest
- January, averaging around -1°C
- Hottest
- July, averaging around 21°C

Stara Planina holds two separate reasons to come, not one: Jun–Sep for hiking; winter for skiing. Outside those windows the mountain still functions, but without snow there's no skiing, and without warm weather the climb to Midžor and the walk down to the waterfalls turn harder and slower.
The date here doesn't just set the temperature — it decides which of the two mountains you actually visit: the one with the chairlift and ski runs, or the one with the trail to Midžor and the waterfalls.
Jun–Sep for hiking; winter for skiing
This is the only period when climbing Midžor is realistic without technical gear, on a wide track clear of snow. Kaluđerski Skok and Tupavica are easiest to reach then, and the natural pools below Tupavica are where people cool off after the walk.

Skiing at Babin Zub
The chairlift and ski runs operate at Babin Zub, with a day pass at free; winter ski pass €29.38–31.94. Off the runs the mountain is hard going in winter — Midžor, Kaluđerski Skok and Tupavica are left for the warmer months.
Month by month
Average of the daily mean in the valley, not on the summit of Midžor (2,169 m), 2021–2024; source Open-Meteo, downloaded 6.9.2026 — the summit runs colder and windier than the table shows.
The ski season and the hiking window don't fit into a single visit — arrive in winter and you see Babin Zub; arrive in summer and you see Midžor and the waterfalls.
Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can Stara Planina be visited in both summer and winter on the same trip?
Rarely in practice — Jun–Sep for hiking; winter for skiing, and one set of gear and one plan doesn't cover both seasons.
Does the Babin Zub ski pass need booking ahead?
No. The lift ticket and day pass are bought on the spot at Babin Zub, priced at free; winter ski pass €29.38–31.94.
Which months get the most rain?
May and June, among the wettest months of the year — this changes the walk down to Kaluđerski Skok and Tupavica the most.
