2–3 days cover the arrival and Zavojsko Lake, a full day's climb to Midžor, and the waterfalls — Kaluđerski Skok with a guide, Tupavica without one. The way in is a bus to Pirot, 1 h 31 from Niš, then a car or taxi on to the base.
Arrival and Zavojsko Lake
Departure on the Niš-ekspres coach to Pirot — 1 h 31 from Niš for €4.09 (Niš–Pirot, promo).
In Pirot, pick up a rental car or arrange a taxi onward: bus to Pirot, then car/taxi, there is no organised service beyond Pirot.
Zavojsko Lake and the Kozji Kamen viewpoint, a short drive from Pirot: free.
Lunch in Pirot or in a village on the way to the mountain — a main course runs €3–8.
Drive on to Babin Zub; there's no hostel in the region (none), so a guesthouse or private room is the only option for the night.
bus to Pirot, then car/taxi — anyone without a rental car from Pirot depends on a taxi arranged in advance.

Midžor
Set off from the old mountain hut at Babin Zub for Midžor, on a wide track with nothing technical: free, reservation: no (closed: none).
The summit: a break for food and water, then back down the same way — no detours and no other stops that day.
Back at Babin Zub before dark; dinner and a night's stay.
The climb and the descent together take up most of the day; setting off after noon means not getting back before dark.
Kaluđerski Skok and Tupavica
Meet the mountain guide for Kaluđerski Skok, arranged in advance: reservation yes, guide only (closed: none). There's no going without a guide — the ground is overgrown and there's no marked trail.
Back with the guide to the starting point, then the drive to Dojkinci.
Tupavica, right off the road near Dojkinci: free, reservation: no (closed: none) — natural pools below the fall for cooling off in summer.
Back to the base or on to Pirot, depending on the next morning's departure.
The Pirot tourist board wants this arranged before arrival — anyone who turns up without a guide is left with Tupavica and Zavojsko Lake.
What spoils the plan
- No guide arranged in advance. The reservation for Kaluđerski Skok is yes, guide only — without it there's no reaching the waterfall, however good the weather.
- No car sorted in Pirot. bus to Pirot, then car/taxi — beyond the bus station, everything depends on your own transport.
- Setting off for Midžor too late. The whole second day goes on the climb and the descent; leaving after noon doesn't leave time to get back before dark.
Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
How many days does Stara Planina need?
2–3. Midžor alone takes up most of a day, and Kaluđerski Skok only runs with a guide arranged in advance, so the two rarely fit into the same day.
Where's the best place to start from?
Belgrade (BEG); Niš (INI) closer — bus to Pirot, then car/taxi, 1 h 31 from Niš for €4.09 (Niš–Pirot, promo).
Does the guide for Kaluđerski Skok need booking ahead?
Yes — reservation yes, guide only, without it there's no reaching the waterfall since there's no marked trail.
