Sremski Karlovci in 1 day
The 1699 peace treaty takes less time to see than the journey to it — the centre is walked in a morning, and the Gymnasium, with no confirmed way inside, is seen from the street.
- How long
- half a day to a day
- Getting around
- train to Novi Sad + bus 61/62

This plan starts at the railway station in Novi Sad, not in Karlovci itself: bus 61 or 62 runs straight to the centre, and everything from there is on foot. The order follows the streets, not a list of names — the Gymnasium and the cathedral stand by the same square, the fountain and the chapel sit further along the same route, and Stražilovo is saved for last, when there's time for the valley.
The Gymnasium, the cathedral, the fountain, the chapel and Stražilovo
Bus 61 or 62 from the railway station in Novi Sad, straight to the centre of Karlovci.
The Karlovci Gymnasium, built in 1891 in Serbo-Byzantine style — the oldest Serbian grammar school, teaching since 1791. The building is free (from outside); none (viewed from outside).
The Cathedral of St Nicholas, a Baroque church from 1758–1762 with towers designed by Zaharije Orfelin — once the seat of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci, later the Patriarchate. Entry free.
The Four Lions Fountain, red marble, built in 1799 for the town's first water supply. Entry free.
The Chapel of Peace, an oval Catholic chapel from 1817 on the site of the house where the 1699 talks were held — four doors, one for each power at the negotiating table. Entry free.
Lunch in the centre, with a bermet tasting at one of some fifteen cellars — only if arranged ahead, before arriving in town.
Stražilovo, a valley on Fruška Gora a few kilometres from the centre, with the grave of the poet Branko Radičević and the start of the Fruška Gora hiking transversal.

A bermet tasting needs arranging ahead. Turn up without calling a cellar and Karlovci gets toured without the wine — which is half the reason to come.

If half a day is left over
- Stražilovo, further on. The Fruška Gora hiking transversal continues through the national park; with a car and a map, the walk extends well beyond this plan.
- Novi Sad. The same day, it's an easy return to the centre of Novi Sad, with its fortress and Dunavska street — about ten minutes on the same bus back.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can the Gymnasium be visited inside?
The building is free (from outside); there's no reliably confirmed way into the classrooms or the library, so this plan counts on the outside view.
Do you need to call ahead for a bermet tasting?
Yes. Cellars in Karlovci take visitors by prior arrangement, not on the spot.
How long does the trip from Novi Sad to Karlovci take?
City bus 61 or 62 from the railway station in Novi Sad runs straight to the centre of Karlovci.
