Where to go: five more questions →

Two destinations lie beyond the spa itself, in different directions: Rtanj to the north, a mountain worth the climb on its own, and Niš to the south, a city already on the way to Sokobanja, with its own page and its fortress and Ćele Kula.

Rtanj

A pyramid-shaped mountain some fifteen kilometres north of Sokobanja in a straight line — the climb to the 1,565-metre Šiljak summit needs fitness and solid boots, with little shade along most of the trail. It has its own page on this site, with the whole climb laid out step by step.

Niš

The city you already pass through to reach Sokobanja, 1 h 15 – 1 h 20 by bus, a ticket €8.70. It has its own, much larger page on this site — a fortress in the centre, Ćele Kula and the Crveni Krst camp a few kilometres further out.

What to know in advance

  • Rtanj needs a car. Public transport to Rtanj village, the trailhead, is not confirmed.
  • Niš is rarely added as a separate day. In practice it gets covered on the way in or out, not as a third trip after Rtanj.
