The best time to visit Verona

The opera festival fills the Arena and the city from June to September, so outside it the same loop through the centre is easier and cheaper.

Where to go: five more questions →

The best months for Verona are Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct. The reason is the Po plain: there is no sea to soften summer, so the heat and humidity run high. Outside the festival, the same loop through the centre is walked without queues and without the Arena's special rate.

If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

In spring and autumn the temperature lets you walk the loop from the Arena to Castelvecchio without a heat break.

Summer

Opera, but also heat and a different rate

From 12 June to 12 September 2026 the Arena is the stage of the opera festival. An evening performance is one more reason to come then. Entry on those days isn't priced the same as outside the performance season, and by day the city is at its hottest. The plan splits accordingly. Sights in the morning, a break at midday, the performance in the evening.

Winter

Quieter, colder, no special rate

Outside the festival period the Arena runs its normal price and schedule. Winter is the quietest the centre gets all year. Nothing closes for the cold. You linger less at Castel San Pietro or in the Giardino Giusti than in the warmer months.

  • Going for the opera? Buy your performance ticket ahead and expect a different Arena rate that day.
  • Avoiding the crowds? September catches the tail of the festival without July and August's heat.
  • Going in winter? Everything in the one-day plan still runs, you just spend less time at the viewpoints.
