From Parma you go in four directions: Modena by train takes a whole day, and the ham valley by bus half a day. Torrechiara and Langhirano share the same line, and the cellar tour can only be done as an organised trip.
Modena — the nearest by train
The Modena trip is by train (Trenitalia, regionale), direct; it takes about 32 min, and a return ticket is €12.60. The centre holds the cathedral, the Ghirlandina tower and Piazza Grande, all UNESCO-listed since 1997; the cathedral was begun in 1099. Next to them is the Mercato Albinelli, a covered market opened in 1931. The souvenir to carry home is aceto balsamico tradizionale, which ages at least twelve years.

Langhirano and Torrechiara — the ham valley
By TEP bus, line 2670, Langhirano takes about 50 min. Langhirano is where the ham is cured, and it holds the Ham Museum. The same line goes on to Torrechiara Castle, about 45 min; entry: €8 (castle admission). Each place takes half a day.

The Parmesan and ham cellar tour
No public transport reaches the dairies and curing houses, so you go organised, by van or car. A tour from Parma takes half a day to a full day, depending on the option.
What to sort out in advance
- Half a day to spare. Langhirano and Torrechiara share line 2670, so they combine into one day; Modena takes a whole day.
- The cellar tour. The only one not settled at the station: ask for a quote ahead, since no price is published.
