Where to stay in Naples
Centro storico puts everything within reach and never quite goes quiet, Chiaia is calmer and pricier, and near Garibaldi the bed is cheapest, with the line to Pompeii right outside in the morning.

- Near Garibaldi
- The cheapest bed

For a place to stay, Naples splits into three areas that don't resemble each other: centro storico, Chiaia and the area around Piazza Garibaldi. A hostel bed is €14–26, a three-star room €45–85 per person, and the difference between them is less about price than about what you hear through the window.
Everything close, but not quiet
Outside the door is cobblestone laid on the old Greek grid, with houses whose balconies almost touch across the lane. From here the Archaeological Museum and the Sansevero Chapel are a few minutes' walk, and Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli are a step further. The price of that closeness is sound: around Piazza Bellini and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, bars run late, and it carries through a window facing the street; a room facing the courtyard is quieter.

A step further, by the sea
Chiaia is flat and tidy, with the Via Caracciolo promenade along the bay and shops along Via Chiaia. Centro storico is a walk away, or a funicular ride up towards Vomero, and it's calmer than the old town at night. The same room here usually costs more than in centro storico, since the price includes a view.

Cheapest, by the line out
Around Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale station, a hostel bed drops to the lower end of the price range, €14–26, and the Circumvesuviana for Pompeii and Herculaneum leaves from the same side of the square, at Porta Nolana. It's practical for an early start on the ruins, but louder and less polished than the other two areas.

For one night
For a single night before an early train, near Garibaldi you save the most and lose no time coming back late. For two nights or more, centro storico or Chiaia give more for the evening.
- Don't pick a room from the map alone. Two addresses equally close to the Duomo can be one on a loud main street, the other in a quiet lane round the corner — check the exact address, not just the quarter.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Centro storico or Chiaia for a first visit to Naples?
Centro storico if the priority is being close to the sights and the evening noise doesn't bother you; Chiaia if the priority is quiet and a seafront walk.
Is it worth staying near Garibaldi?
For one night before an early train to Pompeii or Herculaneum, yes — the bed is cheapest and the station is right there. For a longer stay, centro storico or Chiaia give more.
