The best time to visit Naples

Summer heat pushes the plan toward Capri and Amalfi, and a rough sea after an autumn storm can shut both the hydrofoil and the Blue Grotto.

Where to go: five more questions →

Naples has a Mediterranean climate, with a hot, dry summer and a mild, rainy winter. Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct sit in between — warm enough for a long day at the ruins, without the August heat that makes the climb to Vomero harder, and without the rough winter sea that can cancel the hydrofoil.

If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

Why Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

These months hold enough warmth for a full day on your feet, in the old town or at the ruins, and sit outside July and August, when the heat peaks and the sea around Capri is thickest with swimmers. September and October also add a calmer sea for the hydrofoil.

Summer pulls towards the sea, not the city

July and August are the hottest, driest months, so a day is easier spent on Capri or along the Amalfi coast than uphill in Vomero or in a long queue for the Archaeological Museum. Vesuvius runs in summer too; whether the crater trail is open on a given day comes down to the park's weather forecast.

Winter, and a sea that won't cooperate

Naples is quieter and cheaper in winter, but the sea around Capri can turn rough, and then neither the hydrofoil sails nor the Blue Grotto opens. Anyone arriving off-season should treat Capri as a call to make on the morning itself, with Pompeii and Herculaneum as the safe main goal.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

What's the best month for Naples?

Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct — warm enough for long days, without the August heat or the rough winter sea.

Can Vesuvius be visited off-season?

Yes, it's open year-round, but the crater trail closes in bad weather — that depends on the day, not just the month.

When does the sea disrupt trips the most?

In winter, when it's most likely to be rough; that's when the Capri hydrofoil and entry to the Blue Grotto most often fall through.
