Getting around Naples

Capodichino is the only airport, a bus runs straight into the centre, and anyone heading uphill on the Montesanto funicular has found the doors shut since 15 May 2026.

Where to go: five more questions →

Naples has only one airport, Capodichino, about 20–30 min from the centre by Alibus. The ruins are reached by the Circumvesuviana, and the hill above the city by metro and funicular — just not the one that isn't running.

1. Capodichino airport

The Alibus straight into town

Capodichino is the only airport in Naples, so there's no choosing a terminal like in Rome or Milan. The official Alibus leaves from outside the terminal and runs about 20–30 min to Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale station, then on to Piazza Municipio and Molo Beverello. The fare is €5, bought on board or at the kiosk outside the airport.

2. For Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius: the Circumvesuviana

The train for the ruins doesn't leave from the main Napoli Centrale station but from the neighbouring Porta Nolana, or from Garibaldi station below the square. The city fare of €1.30–1.50 doesn't apply here — the Circumvesuviana has its own zone-based ticket, bought separately, at a machine or the station counter.

3. Uphill

The metro and two funiculars

Metro line 1 runs from Museo station, by the Archaeological Museum, uphill to Vanvitelli in Vomero. From there the Chiaia funicular runs back down into Chiaia. The Centrale funicular, from Via Toledo, runs the same way, up to Piazza Fuga in Vomero. The third, Montesanto, has been shut since 15 May 2026 for a general overhaul; while it is, a bus replaces it, and it's quicker to change at Centrale or Chiaia instead.

4. In the old town: everything on foot

Centro storico, Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali are flat and close together, so you barely need transport inside them. Transport is for getting in and out of that area — to the station, to Vomero, to Chiaia — and inside it you walk.

No, it's been shut since 15 May 2026 for renovation; metro line 1 or the Centrale and Chiaia funiculars reach Vomero instead.
