Where to stay in Pécs
In Pécs the choice isn't about a metro stop — the city has none — it's about how close you are to Széchenyi Square, where the whole historic core sits.
- For a first visit
- The centre
- For a longer stay or quiet
- Near the Zsolnay Quarter
- 3-star hotel
- €27–39 per person per night

Pécs is small enough that choosing where to stay comes down to two questions: is the main square five minutes away or fifteen, and is a quieter spot outside the centre worth that difference. The historic core around Széchenyi Square covers almost everything on the list; the Zsolnay Quarter, a little south, is the other real option.
The centre — around Széchenyi Square
Széchenyi Square is both the geographic and the touristic centre of Pécs: within a few minutes' walk of it sit St Peter's Cathedral, the Mosque of Pasha Qasim and a pedestrian area with cafés and shops. A fifteen-minute walking circle covers almost everything on the main sights list, so for a first or only stay this is the one area where you barely need to ride anything.

The Zsolnay Quarter — a cultural complex outside the centre
The former Zsolnay ceramics factory, a little south of the centre, is now a cultural quarter. The grounds themselves are free to walk through; the exhibitions — the Zsolnay Museum, the mausoleum, the m21 gallery — run on a separate Heritage ticket (free (grounds); Heritage ticket €33.11). A guided walk linking Széchenyi Square to the quarter, including the walk there, takes about two hours — roughly how much further out this area sits compared with the centre, on foot.
