Where to stay in Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton has no town where everything sits in one place — shoreline ~197 km · Balatonfüred–Tihany 12 km · Balatonfüred–Keszthely 55 km, and each town on the shore suits a different plan. Balatonfüred is the only one with a direct rail line from Budapest and the widest choice of hotels, which makes it the usual base for two or three days. Tihany is a peninsula with an abbey, Keszthely sits at the other end of the lake, close to the Hévíz thermal lake. A dorm bed — a hostel — does not exist anywhere on Balaton.
Balatonfüred — the base on the railway
Balatonfüred is the only town on Balaton with a direct rail line to Budapest, which makes it the starting point for most two- or three-day plans. The hotel supply is densest here — a double room in the Danubius chain (Marina, Annabella) starts at €52–113 per person per night — and the Tagore lakeside promenade is free and runs right along the shore.

Tihany — a peninsula, a day trip in itself
Tihany is a peninsula set apart, with its own abbey (€9.40 for a ticket) and a view over both arms of the lake from one spot. shoreline ~197 km · Balatonfüred–Tihany 12 km · Balatonfüred–Keszthely 55 km — close enough to Balatonfüred for a same-day trip, too far to walk from the centre.

Keszthely — the south-western end, next to Hévíz
Keszthely sits at the opposite, south-western end of the lake from Balatonfüred. It has Festetics Castle (€14.35, the price valid for the 2026 summer season) and is the closest base for the Hévíz thermal lake — a separate, paid trip, not part of free swimming in Balaton.

Siófok — the south shore, reached by boat
Siófok sits on the south shore, where the beaches are maintained beaches, mostly flat sandy/grassy bottom (especially south shore). The scheduled BAHART boat connects it with Tihany and Balatonfüred on the north shore — €6.60 (one-way) for a one-way ticket — so it is possible to stay on one shore and cross to the other without a car.
