Where to go: five more questions →

This plan follows the side of the lake, not a list of sights: day one is the north shore around the Balatonfüred base, day two is the south-western corner near Keszthely, day three is the hills above the water. Mix them up and the driving doubles, since the shoreline runs 197 kilometres round.

Day 1

Balatonfüred and Tihany, the north shore

09:00

Arrival train to Balatonfüred (from Budapest-Kelenföld/Déli), stepping straight onto Tagore promenade, the lakeside walk in Balatonfüred. Free to walk (free).

11:00

On to Tihany, 12 km away on its peninsula, by car or the BAHART boat — a one-way ticket €6.60 (one-way).

12:00

Straight on to Tihany Abbey, the main stop before lunch in the same village — €9.40, a visit runs 60 min (guided tour); tours up to 2 h.

13:30

Lunch in Tihany or Balatonfüred: a plain lángos for €3.60–4.15 or with cheese and sour cream for €6.90–8.30.

15:30

A swim at a Balatonfüred beach, before dinner back in town.

19:00

Dinner: halászlé, fisherman's soup, for €6.35–9.65.

Day 2

Keszthely and Hévíz, the south-west corner

09:00

The second morning heads to the opposite end of the lake, to Keszthely — easiest by car, since public transport on this leg runs slower.

10:00

First stop on arrival: Festetics Castle, ticket €14.35.

12:30

Lunch, a set menu for €6.90–8.

14:00

After the castle, Lake Hévíz thermal spa closes the afternoon — €12.40 (3 h), 3 h (basic ticket duration).

17:30

Back towards Balatonfüred.

Day 3

Badacsony and Herend, the hills above the lake

09:00

Day three starts at Badacsony — the paths cost nothing to walk, tastings at the wineries along the way are paid separately.

12:30

Lunch in one of the hillside villages.

14:00

Herend, the porcelain manufactory — admission €8.85 (factory ticket only).

17:00

Back towards Balatonfüred, or on towards Budapest.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Does three days at Lake Balaton work without a car?

The first two days do — a train to Balatonfüred, then the BAHART boat to Tihany. Day three, to Badacsony and Herend, moves faster by car; without one it needs a longer connection.

Can Keszthely and Hévíz be done the same day as Tihany?

Not without forcing the plan — Keszthely sits 55 km from Balatonfüred, the opposite end of the lake from Tihany. A separate day works better.

What if only two days are available?

Day one of the plan (Balatonfüred and Tihany) and day two (Keszthely and Hévíz) cover both shores; the third day in the hills is an add-on, not the base.
