The best time to visit Lake Balaton
Balaton is a lake, not a sea, so the swimming season has an official start and end — mid-June to end of August, with May and September as the quieter, cheaper edges.

One thing decides the date for Balaton: whether the beaches and lifeguards are on duty. The official season runs from mid-June to the end of August; outside it, some beaches still open but without lifeguards or the full setup. The 2–3 days of touring fit any month — only the swimming depends on the date.
The official swimming season
The official swimming season at Lake Balaton, from Balatonfüred to Siófok, has a clear window: mid-Jun – end Aug (official lifeguard season) · May–Sep wider (some beaches open). The date is tied to when beaches get lifeguards and full equipment, not water temperature — before mid-June and after the end of August, some beaches still open, just without supervision.

May and September
The season has a peak and quieter edges: Jun–Aug; May and Sep quieter. Outside the peak, beaches have fewer people and accommodation costs less; touring Tihany, Balatonfüred and the hills around Badacsony does not depend on it.

Why the lakebed matters for families
The lakebed near Siófok, on the south shore, does not change with the calendar: maintained beaches, mostly flat sandy/grassy bottom (especially south shore). That means the water stays shallow well past the edge regardless of month — what the season changes is whether a beach is staffed and set up, not the shape of the bed.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
When is the official swimming season at Lake Balaton?
From mid-June to the end of August, when beaches have lifeguards and full equipment. More broadly, from May to September, some beaches still operate.
Is May too early for Lake Balaton?
Not for sightseeing — Tihany, Balatonfüred and the hills do not depend on the season. For organised swimming with lifeguards, yes, that starts only in mid-June.
Is Lake Balaton shallow for children?
The lakebed is mostly flat, sandy or grassy, especially on the south shore, so the water stays shallow for a long stretch — that holds in any month, not just in season.
