Monastir in 1 day
The ribat, the medina, the mausoleum and the marina in one walking loop — Skanes beach and day trips are for the days after.

The old core of Monastir fits into one walking loop: from the Ribat on the shore, through the medina to the Great Mosque, on to the gold-domed Bourguiba mausoleum, and finally the marina. Everything sits close together, so the day isn't rushed. Skanes beach and day trips to Sousse, Mahdia or Kairouan are for the day after, since they need a taxi or a train outside this loop.
The Ribat, the medina, the mausoleum, the marina
The Ribat. A courtyard, a prayer hall and a tower looking over the sea and the old cemetery, €2.37, open winter 8.30am–5.30pm, summer 8am–7pm, Ramadan 8am–5pm.
The medina, right behind the Ribat's walls, 1 h 30 without hurrying, free. Its lanes and souk lead to the courtyard of the Great Mosque, seen from the street.
The Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, a few steps on, recognisable by its gold dome. Free entry, no booking; the gardens stay open even when the interior is shut for a ceremony.
Lunch in the streets around the medina. Fricassé, the tuna-and-egg sandwich, runs €0.90–2, lablabi soup €3–4.50.
Monastir Marina (Cap Monastir), the last stop, with sailboats and yachts along the quay. No ticket needed, just a walk along the water.
A free afternoon. Skanes is a separate taxi ride, not a continuation of this walk.

The beach is reached by taxi, so it's better left for a second day, after the old core.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can Monastir be done in a single day?
The old core, yes — the Ribat, the medina, the mausoleum and the marina fit one walking loop. Skanes beach and day trips to nearby towns need extra days.
Does anything need booking ahead?
Not on this loop. Nothing on it has a fixed time slot or requires a booking.
