Where to go: five more questions →

Kairouan sits inland, with no sea to soften the temperature, so summers are dry and hot and winter evenings turn cold. March–May and Sep–Nov stay clear of both extremes and of the coast's charter crowds. On Fridays, whatever the month, the Great Mosque, the Aghlabid Basins and the Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi all keep shorter hours for prayers.

A climate with no sea nearby

Unlike Sousse or Hammamet, Kairouan has no sea to soften its temperature. Summer is dry and hot, the monuments' courtyards offer no shade from the midday sun, and winter evenings can turn cold in a medina where many houses have no heating. March–May and Sep–Nov leave both warm walking weather and bearable midday heat.

Friday changes the schedule, not the season

Whatever the month, Fridays shorten the hours at all three main monuments for prayers: the Great Mosque runs winter 8–2pm, summer 7.30–2pm, Friday until noon, the Aghlabid Basins winter 8–5pm, summer 7.30–2pm, shorter Fri/weekend, the Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi winter 8–3pm, summer 7.30–2pm, Friday until 1pm. Anyone travelling on a Friday plans the loop from early morning, or flips it, starting outside the walls and finishing at the Great Mosque.

What runs regardless of season

Bir Barouta, the medina and the carpet souk have no closed season; the souk still only trades Mon/Wed/Sat, as the zarbia market, so that part of the day is planned around the day of the week, not the month. Anyone combining Kairouan with the amphitheatre at El Jem picks a morning for one site and an afternoon for the other, since neither has shade at midday.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

When is the best time to visit Kairouan?

March–May and Sep–Nov, avoiding the summer heat and the cold winter evenings.

Why is Friday different?

The Great Mosque, the Aghlabid Basins and the Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi all keep shorter hours for prayers, so the loop that day starts earlier or runs in reverse.
