The day starts in Sousse, louage or SNCRT bus from the Sousse station, 1 h 30 to Kairouan. Six stops fit into one loop: the well with the camel at the medina's entrance, the city's main mosque, two sites beyond the ramparts, and the carpet souk on the way to departure.
From the well to the souk, and back to Sousse
Departure from Sousse, louage or SNCRT bus from the Sousse station.
Arrival in Kairouan, 1 h 30 from the Sousse station.
Bir Barouta, where a tethered camel draws water by turning an old wooden wheel, just off the medina's high street. The ticket costs free, plus the usual small tip for the handler.
The Great Mosque, a few lanes further, on the edge of the medina. A visit takes 1 h, entry €3.56, open winter 8–2pm, summer 7.30–2pm, Friday until noon.
Through the gate beyond the ramparts to the Aghlabid Basins, seen on a loop along their edge, half an hour, entry €3.56, open winter 8–5pm, summer 7.30–2pm, shorter Fri/weekend.
The Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi, a tiled shrine built around the tomb of a companion of the Prophet. A visit takes 45 min, entry €3.56, open winter 8–3pm, summer 7.30–2pm, Friday until 1pm.
Lunch in the medina; what to eat and where is on the food page.
Back through the gate to the carpet souk and the medina's lanes, 2 h, ending at the Mosque of the Three Doors, its carved 866 front visible only from the street.
Louage or driver back to Sousse, 1 h 30.

The Great Mosque, the Aghlabid Basins and the Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi all keep shorter hours on Fridays, until noon or early afternoon for prayers. The loop runs in reverse that day, from the sites outside the walls to the Great Mosque, to avoid arriving too late.
