From the arena to the villa and back
Train or louage from Sousse, about 1 h; the station is a fifteen-minute walk from the amphitheatre.
Three tiers of arcades: a 36-metre outer wall, walked on every level.
Beneath the arena, two cool, dark passages under the stage — the best spot once the sun climbs high.
The arena, an ellipse of 65 by 39 metres, through the gladiators' gate.
A kilometre on foot to the mosaic museum, 1 h, air-conditioned and as a rule empty.
Villa Africa in the park beside the museum, a patrician house on almost 3,000 square metres, with the mosaic of the goddess Africa in the floor of its main hall.
Lunch at one of the couple of restaurants by the amphitheatre, the only ones in the small town.
Train or louage back to Sousse, about 1 h.
After eleven the stone of the arena passes forty degrees, with not a scrap of shade. The museum and the villa are air-conditioned and come second, after the amphitheatre.
With a driver, El Jem comes before noon, while the arena is still out of the sun, and Kairouan after, an hour and a half further on. Reversing the order leaves the shadeless arena for the afternoon heat.
