Piran is handled in three steps: where the car stays, how you reach the old town from there, and how you reach the rest of the municipality. The intercity timetables belong to the operators, so this page gives the pattern and leaves the minutes to them.
Getting to Piran
There is no railway and no airport, so every way into Piran is a bus or a car. Arriva connects the town with Ljubljana, Maribor, Postojna, Koper, Izola and Portorož, and Nomago covers the Koper end of the coast. Piran sits at the tip of its peninsula, so the road in has nowhere else to go, which is why the garages stand outside the old town and not in it.
FlixBus adds Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice, Vienna, Bratislava, Rovinj and Umag, which turns Piran into a stop on a longer coastal route and not only a terminus. Fares and departure times change, so read them at the operator before you plan around a single minute.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.

By car and the vignette
The vignette is Slovenia's motorway toll, sold as an e-vignette tied to the licence plate. For a car in class 2A it costs €16 for seven days, €32 for a month and €117.50 for a year. The seven-day vignette covers an ordinary week on the coast, and the month and the year pay off only on longer stays.
Since 1 January 2026 no vignette is needed on the coastal expressway near Koper, sections H5 and H6. Buy it only on the official DARS site or at authorised points, and make sure the plate you type is the plate on the car.
Parking and the old town
The choice is between two garages, both open round the clock. Arze costs €2 an hour, has about 210 spaces and lies roughly ten minutes on foot, all of it downhill. Fornače costs €3.20 an hour, has 838 spaces and sits about fifteen minutes along the shore from Tartini Square. Leave the car at Arze, and use Fornače only if you want the minibus.
The old town is closed to visitor traffic, so the unloading rule is meant for the hotel door and not for parking. The minibus from Fornače runs about every 15 minutes and from Arze four times a day, for €1 a ride, paid in the Arriva Piran app or by contactless card, because cash is not taken. Driving into the old town is free for 15 minutes to unload people and luggage, then €6 for each started hour from 1 March to 31 October and €4 from 1 November to the end of February. From 1 July to 1 September there is no parking on the square.
The city bus and beyond
Two Arriva city lines serve the rest of the municipality. Line 1 runs Piran, Beli Križ, Portorož, Lucija and back to Piran every day, and line 2 goes Piran, Portorož, Strunjan and back. Take line 1 for a beach day in Portorož and line 2 for Strunjan, where in July and August a free minibus carries on to the Krka bathing area. Neither line takes cash, so load the app or have a contactless card ready before the doors open. The table below gives the fares, and the Single City Card is sold at Lucija bus station.

Where to next

Mistakes everyone makes in Piran
→The mistakes are a car in the old town, Monday, the walls in bad weather, the bell tower in winter and cash on the city bus.

Ljubljana · 93 km
→Slovenia’s capital with no cars in the centre: Plečnik’s bridges, a riverside market and a castle on the hill
