Day trips from Piran
Portorož and Strunjan by city bus in half a day, the Sečovlje salt pans in half a day, Koper by bus and the Škocjan Caves in a full day.
- Portorož
- €2–4 return, half a day
- Strunjan
- €2–4 return, half a day
- Salt pans
- €7 entry, half a day

Piran is small enough that every outing from it comes down to one question. Portorož and Strunjan ask which bus line, the salt pans ask when and for how much, Koper asks whether there is an afternoon to spare, and the Škocjan Caves ask which month, because the ticket changes with the calendar. Three of the five fit into half a day, and the caves need a day of their own.
Half a day
Portorož is the half-day that needs the least planning. Line 1 of the city bus runs every day from Piran through Beli Križ and Portorož to Lucija and back, and a return fare is €2–4. The route draws a loop, so you board on the way out and step off on the way back without retracing anything. Nothing needs booking, which is the whole appeal.
The beaches are the point, Bernardin, Meduza and the central one among them. The tourist office suggests an order for the day, Portorož first, then the salt pans, then Piran again, and it works because the day ends in the town where dinner is.
The cliff and the bathing area
Line 2 runs to Strunjan, and a return fare is €2–4. The reason to go is the cliff. It is flysch, up to 80 m high and about 4 km long within the park, and it formed some 40 million years ago. Bring swimwear, since the bathing area is the other half of the trip.
Krka lies inside the park, and in July and August a free minibus runs from the Strunjan stop to the Krka bathing area, from 8:00 to 22:00. Outside those two months there is no minibus.
The Sečovlje salt pans: half a day
Salt is still made by hand at Sečovlje, and that is the reason to come. The pans cover 650 ha at the mouth of the Dragonja. Entry is €7 from 1 April to 31 October, with a lower rate in winter, from 1 November to 31 March.
The Salt-making Museum is shut from November to March, so a winter visit means walking the pans alone. Groups of fifteen or more must go with a guide. Pair the pans with Portorož on the same day, as the tourist office does, and the outing fills the daylight.
Koper
An Arriva bus runs to Koper from Piran, and the town repays the ride. It had 25,753 inhabitants in 2020. The town holds the 15th-century Praetorian Palace, made from two 13th-century houses joined together, and a cathedral from the second half of the 12th century with a bell cast in 1333.
Koper belonged to Venice from 1278, five years before Piran did, and today it is the only cargo port in Slovenia, so the Venetian past shares the waterfront with cranes. Start at the Praetorian Palace and finish on the cathedral terrace, where the town ends in a view over the Gulf of Trieste.
A full day
The Škocjan Caves have been a UNESCO site since 1986. The main route runs 5 km and takes about two and a half to three hours. It has around 1,000 steps, and the air underground holds 12°C, so a jacket belongs in the bag even in August. Of the five outings this is the only one that deserves a day to itself.
The ticket follows the month. Adults pay €24 in July and August and €16 in the winter months, January to March, November and December, while the months between cost something in the middle. The caves are closed on 1 January and 25 December.
The Reka river runs underground here for 34 km. Hrastovlje is the add-on for the same day: the Church of the Holy Trinity, with frescoes from 1490 found in 1949 under whitewash, among them a Dance of Death 7 m long. The walls around the church rise about 8 m.
