Where to go: five more questions →

The whole Old Town fits into one loop on foot. It starts at the square by the town hall and runs through the house-museums to the Leaning Tower and the castle ruins, then along the river and over the bridge to the island, where the town comes into view whole. How long: 1, or 2 with a night.

The whole day

A loop through the Old Town

09:30

Rynek Staromiejski, the Old Town Market Square. The museums on the loop open at ten, so this half hour belongs to the square and the Gothic town hall in the middle of it.

10:00

Copernicus's House, a few steps from the square. The town has held it to be his birthplace since the eighteenth century. A visit takes about 1 h, entry is €7.53.

11:15

The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread (Muzeum Toruńskiego Piernika), about 1 h. With children, the better pick is the Living Museum of Gingerbread on Rabiańska Street, where you knead your own.

12:30

Lunch in the centre or on the edge of the square. A set lunch is €6.39–10.27.

13:30

The Leaning Tower (Krzywa Wieża), a wall tower out of true by about a metre and a half, entry €4.56. Legend says a sinner can't stand up straight underneath it. Try it.

14:00

The Teutonic castle ruins sit at the edge of the Old Town. You walk through them freely, no guide needed; entry is €4.60.

15:00

Bulwar Filadelfijski, the promenade along the Vistula, leads straight to the bridge onto the island.

15:45

The panorama from Kępa Bazarowa, 15–20 min across the river. The whole Old Town is in view from here, over the water, and late afternoon is the time to look.

What changes the plan

  • It's a Monday? Copernicus's House, the gingerbread museum and the inside of the tower are shut. The walls, the castle ruins and the view stay open, so the day runs shorter. That makes it the day for one of the trips out of town.
  • Starting late? Drop one of the two house-museums. Copernicus's House is better known by name, but the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread tells the history of the trade the town is known for.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

When is the inside of the Leaning Tower open?

Opening hours are in season Tue–Sun 10–18; off-season (Oct–Mar) weekends only, so on a winter weekday you see the tower from outside only.

Does anything need booking ahead?

Not for this loop. The planetarium sells tickets for a set show time, but it isn't part of this walk.

Is a second day worth it?

Only for the lit-up square at night or for a day trip.
