Toruń is walked, and the transport you need is the first leg and nothing else. The main station stands on the far side of the Vistula, so the question that decides your arrival is how to cross the river to the Old Town. Once you are over it, the centre takes about twenty minutes to cross on foot.

From the station to the Old Town

The southern bank of the Vistula is where Toruń Główny stands, about 2 km from the Old Town, so you cross the river before the sightseeing starts. From Warsaw a direct InterCity takes about 2 h 30 to the centre, and the fare for the train and the city bus together is about €10.20. That figure already includes the bus ride, which is the part people forget when they compare prices.

Buses 22 and 27 leave from the stop on Kujawska street, and you reach it through the underpass beside the tracks, which is the easy way to the stop with luggage. The taxi rank stands in the station and on Kujawska, with a daytime fare to the centre between 6am and 10pm of €3.42–4.56. Walking is possible too, over the bridge, and it gives you the Gothic skyline before you arrive. With a suitcase take the bus, and with a daypack take the bridge.

From the airport and other cities

No scheduled flights land at Toruń, so the nearest airport is Bydgoszcz. City bus 80 takes you from the airport to Bydgoszcz Główna and a regional train covers the 43 minutes on to Toruń Główny, and the whole journey costs €4.38. Treat the change at Bydgoszcz as part of the plan, since the airport and the rail line are two separate legs.

Tickets and city transport

Paper tickets are sold for 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 24 hours, and the online or mobile versions are slightly cheaper. Toruń Miasto is a small passenger station right in the centre, which suits any train that stops there. The main bus station is on Dąbrowskiego street, also in the centre, and the carrier ReloBus runs from it. Arriving by coach can therefore put you closer to the Old Town than arriving by train.

On foot in the Old Town

Once you are in the Old Town, public transport has no job left, because the whole centre can be crossed in about twenty minutes. A day ticket makes sense only if you plan to ride out beyond the centre several times in one day. Otherwise a 60-minute ticket for the trip from the station is enough, and another for the way back.

Walking the Philadelphia Boulevard and its panorama is free. Keep it for the end of the day, when the walk through the Old Town has used up the daylight and the view can take the rest. The sensible order is a bus in from the station, the Old Town on foot, and the boulevard last.
