Where to go: five more questions →

A single day in Matera follows the way the two quarters sit around the cathedral spur: Sasso Caveoso in the morning, the centre around midday, Sasso Barisano in the afternoon, then the viewpoint on the far side of the ravine to finish. Arriving from Naples and Bari, the same bus that runs from the airport (about 1 h 15) sets down at the edge of the old town, so the day starts on foot straight away.

One day, from Caveoso to the Belvedere

Both quarters on foot, then across the ravine for sunset

09:00

Into Sasso Caveoso, the lower and steeper of the two quarters. The first half hour is just walking down staircases, no ticket needed — the streets are public.

09:45

Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, a restored cave dwelling: €8, the visit takes 15 min. This is where you see how the Sassi were lived in until 1952.

10:30

One or two rock-cut churches, €3–5 per church. Hours are seasonal — check which one is open that day before setting off.

12:30

A lunch break in Sasso Caveoso or on Piazza Vittorio Veneto, between the two quarters.

14:00

Palombaro Lungo below the main square, a cistern some fifteen metres deep: €3, the visit takes 15 min.

14:45

Across into Sasso Barisano, the larger and gentler quarter, with more rock churches on the way.

16:30

By car or on foot across the gorge to the Belvedere Murgia Timone: €10 (Apr–Oct), €7 (Nov–Mar), booking recommended. From here the whole Sassi lines up at once.

18:30

The last hour before sunset, when the stone turns the colour of honey — the reason to save the viewpoint for the end of the day.

If you stay a second day

This plan fits into one full day. Anyone sleeping in a cave hotel — the usual choice in the Sassi — has a second day free for MUSMA, the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture (€10 (€5 reduced)), and for churches that stayed shut or got skipped on day one.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Is one day enough for Matera?

For both Sassi and the main stops, yes, in a full schedule. Anyone staying overnight in a cave hotel can leave MUSMA and any closed churches for a second day.

Can you drive into the Sassi?

No — the old town is a ZTL zone, the cameras work and the fine follows you home. Parking is outside the camera area, around Via Lucana.
