Where to go: five more questions →

Three destinations, three different reasons to go: Mljet is a full day with a ferry and a national park ticket, Vela Luka holds a cave with finds fifteen to seventeen and a half thousand years old, and Lumbarda is a sand beach and a grk vineyard about fifteen minutes from town. All three sit outside the basic two-day plan for the town itself.

Mljet, a full day

The catamaran to Pomena takes 35–40 min and costs €40 + park €25 — the boat and the Mljet National Park ticket are paid separately. The line runs April–October; outside that window there's no service to Mljet. Two salt lakes inside the park and a Franciscan monastery on the islet in the middle of the Great Lake are why this takes a full day, not half.

Vela Luka and Vela Spila cave

Arriva bus to Vela Luka takes about 1 h and costs €12.60–13.40 (2× one-way) return. Above the town is Vela Spila cave, open Mon–Sat 9–20, closed Sunday. The audio guide downloads free, with no booking needed (no). Ceramic figurines found inside are fifteen to seventeen and a half thousand years old.

Lumbarda and Vela Pržina

Arriva bus to Lumbarda takes 15 min and costs €5.40 (2× €2.70) return. Vela Pržina beach is sandy and free (free); in the plain behind it, wineries pour grk, a white wine grown almost nowhere else, with tastings arranged on the spot.

How long each one takes

ItemAmount
MljetA full day; April–October
Vela Luka and Vela SpilaA full day, with the bus both ways
LumbardaA full day, or half a day for just the beach

Time includes the trip out and back from the old town, not just the visit itself.

Worth checking beforehand

  • Mljet runs on a season. April–October — outside that window the catamaran to Pomena doesn't sail.
  • There's no day ticket for the bus (none) — each ride to Lumbarda or Vela Luka is paid separately.
  • Vela Luka and Lumbarda sit at opposite ends of the island. Both buses leave from the same stop in the old town, so the two trips don't combine into one day.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Does Mljet fit into a two-day plan for Korčula?

Not comfortably — Mljet alone wants a full day; the two-day plan covers the old town and one side of the island, so Mljet becomes a third day.

Can Vela Luka and Lumbarda be done on the same day?

Not sensibly — they sit at opposite ends of the island, and each bus ride runs from the old town separately.

Do you need to book ahead for Vela Spila cave?

No. Arriving within opening hours, Mon–Sat 9–20, is enough.
