Where to go: five more questions →

Pick the month by the reason for the trip. Walking the Old Town suits May, June or September, swimming at Kravice belongs to June through September, and an empty bridge belongs to winter. July looks like the obvious choice and is the hardest one, because the gorge around the town holds the heat.

Through the year

Summer

Heat, jumps and swimming

July averages a daily high of 33.0 °C, and in the gorge July and August can pass 38 to 40 °C. That heat turns the middle of the day into an endurance test. The Old Town is best walked before 9 am and again in the evening. The Old Bridge Museum in the Tara tower takes 30–40 min and gets you indoors at midday.

The summer has its reasons too. Jumpers from the Mostari club hold a competition every year at the end of July, a tradition that dates from 1968. The jumps are usually seen from May to September between 11 am and 3 pm. Watch from the bank, because the drop is over 20 m, the water is cold and shallower than it looks, and only trained club members go in. At Kravice the gates stay open from 7 am to 10 pm from June to September, and swimming there is at your own risk. In July and August go before 9 am or after 4 pm.

Spring and autumn

May, June and September are the months to choose for a first visit, because the walking is comfortable. The day still has room for a trip out of town. The coach groups keep their old timing in these months, arriving around 10 or 11, so the early hours stay the best ones.

Kravice shortens its hours as the season turns. In May the gates close at 8 pm, in October at 7 pm, and in March and April at 6 pm, always after opening at 7 am. The summer weekend train from Sarajevo to Ploče ended its 2026 run on 27 September, so the regular timetable is the one that remains in autumn.

Winter

Rain and an empty bridge

January averages a daily high of 9.3 °C, and the year brings 1,445 mm of rain on the 1991 to 2020 normals, so a waterproof jacket is part of the winter kit. Wet stone is slippery, and the bridge deserves slow steps in that weather.

The reward is space. Fewer coaches come, the Old Town loses its crowd, and the bridge can be crossed without a queue of cameras. Kravice is open from 7 am to 5 pm from November to February. A bowl of begova čorba at Saray in the Old Town suits a wet afternoon.
