The best time to visit Zell am See

Zell am See runs on two seasons that don't overlap — the lake in summer and skiing in winter — so the month decides which one you get.

Where to go: five more questions →

Two questions pick the month for Zell am See, whether the lake is warm enough to swim in, and whether the ski runs are open. The answer rarely overlaps; June–September (lake, hiking); December–March (skiing). The Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn are the exception, since both run through either season on the same mountain.

Winter

Skiing on two sides

From December to March there's skiing on both the Kitzsteinhorn, the glacier above Kaprun, and the Schmittenhöhe; two mountains on two sides of town, both reached by cable car from the same place.

What runs all year, what runs only in summer

The Kitzsteinhorn runs all year, closed day none. The same goes for the Schmittenhöhe, closed day none. The Grossglockner road is off-season (roughly Nov–Apr, dates vary), the Kaprun reservoirs off-season (winter, exact dates unconfirmed), and the Krimml falls off-season (roughly Nov–mid Apr); all three wait for warmer months.

April and May are the wettest

Both months average nineteen rainy days, more than any other month of the year. That doesn't change skiing at altitude, but it changes a trip to the Grossglockner road or Kaprun; check the forecast that morning.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can the lake and skiing be seen on the same visit?

Not in the same month; summer carries the lake, winter the skiing, and the shoulder months (April, May, October, November) carry neither at full strength.

Is the Kitzsteinhorn open in winter?

It runs all year; none means no seasonal closure, only walking in summer switches to skiing in winter.

Which month gets the most rain?

April and May, with nineteen rainy days on average each.
