Where to go: five more questions →

Lake Como is for spring to September. That is when both the villas and the full boat timetable run, and July and August are the hottest and busiest. Three calendars decide, the climate, the boats and the villas, each with its own opening dates.

The year by month

MonthDaily mean and rain
January5 °C, 7 rainy days
February7 °C, 6 rainy days
March9 °C, 8 rainy days
April12 °C, 10 rainy days
May17 °C, 19 rainy days
June22 °C, 15 rainy days
July24 °C, 12 rainy days
August24 °C, 10 rainy days
September20 °C, 12 rainy days
October16 °C, 10 rainy days
November9 °C, 10 rainy days
December6 °C, 5 rainy days

If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

The table tells how warm it is and how much rain falls; it does not say whether the lake is in full season. That is for the villas and the boats.

The boats keep a seasonal timetable

Navigazione Laghi changes its timetable with the season: the Como–Bellagio line runs every day only in the summer part of the year, and on a different timetable outside it. So a day is not planned without the timetable for that date. The ordinary line to Bellagio takes about 2 h 35 min by boat from Como (one-way, ordinary line), so any change to the timetable shifts the whole day.

The villas open and close the season

Villa Carlotta is open 20 Mar–18 Oct 2026: 10:00–19:00 (last entry 18:00); 19 Oct–8 Nov: 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00); special days 14–15, 21–22, 28–29 Nov and 5–8 Dec: 10:00–16:00. It is closed outside the listed days (mid-Nov–Mar, except the special dates above). Villa del Balbianello is open 14–28 Feb weekends only; from 14 Mar daily except Mondays and Wednesdays (non-holidays); summer 10:00–18:00 (last park entry 17:00, last guided tour 16:00); November 10:00–17:00, and closed Monday and Wednesday (non-holidays), partly closed Dec–Feb outside season. Anyone coming in winter counts on limited dates for the villas. The town, the cathedral and the funicular run all year.

Which month for whom

  • A full timetable and open villas means spring to September, by the villas' dates.
  • Fewer crowds means September, when the boats still run and July and August are behind.
  • Off-season — the town, the cathedral and the funicular run, while the villas are partly or wholly closed and the boats keep a different timetable.
