Day one is a loop through the core, in the same order the Brno page describes it: from Zelný trh, uphill to Petrov, then to a second hill for Špilberk, and back downhill to the St James's ossuary. Day two goes outside the core, to Villa Tugendhat, which won't let you in without a slot booked ahead, and to the Mendel Museum. With only one day, do the first and you miss none of the six main sights.
The loop through the core
Arrival from Prague, train (České dráhy/RegioJet, direct), 2 h 30–37 min.
Zelný trh, the vegetable market with the Baroque Parnas fountain at its centre, free.
Uphill to Petrov cathedral. Both towers and the treasury cost €2.45 to enter, open summer (May–Sep) Mon–Sat 10–18:15, Sun 12–18:15; winter (Oct–Apr) Mon–Sat 11–16:45, Sun 12–16:45.
To a second hill, for Špilberk fortress. A ticket covering the casemates and the museum is €10.65, open museum & casemates daily 9–18 (Apr–Sep) / 10–17 (Oct–Mar).
Lunch in the core, a set menu is €5.95–6.55.
Downhill from the fortress, the St James's ossuary, €6.55, open daily 9:30–18 (last entry 17:30), tours every 30 min.
A free afternoon. Náměstí Svobody with the astronomical clock is a few steps further and costs nothing.
Villa Tugendhat is closed Monday and Tuesday, so day two has to fall on a Wednesday or later. The ossuary is closed only Monday; if day one lands on one, leave the ossuary for the morning of day two, before heading out to the villa.
Outside the core, on a slot
Villa Tugendhat, Mies van der Rohe's 1928–1930 house, on a booked slot. A ticket is €20.50, open Wed–Sun 9–17, last entry 16:30.
The Mendel Museum, in the Augustinian abbey where Gregor Mendel grew peas for his experiments on inheritance. The core exhibition is €2.45, open Apr–Oct Tue–Sun 10–18; Nov–Mar Tue–Sun 10–17.
A free afternoon before the train back.
What to drop when you're running late
- Late start on day one? Skip Petrov and go straight to Špilberk — the view from the fortress carries the same city panorama, just without the cathedral's towers.
- No slot for Villa Tugendhat? Day two still has the Mendel Museum, and the villa waits for a return trip to Brno.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
What gets dropped with only one day?
Day two: Villa Tugendhat and the Mendel Museum. Day one's loop through the core fits into a single day and covers four of the six main sights.
Why can't day two fall on a Monday or Tuesday?
Because Villa Tugendhat is closed then, Monday and Tuesday, and without it day two loses its main reason.
Does anything need booking ahead?
Yes, a slot for Villa Tugendhat. The rest of the plan needs no booking.
