Where to go: five more questions →

An Amalfi plan has two halves that don't mix: the town, which fits into one day, and the trail above it, which needs a second. The first day runs from the cathedral through the valley of the paper mills to the arsenal, and the second starts with a climb and comes back to Amalfi through Atrani.

Day one: the town

The cathedral in the morning, the paper mill in the valley, the arsenal after lunch

10:00

The Duomo. One ticket (€3) covers the cloister, the crypt with the relics of the apostle Andrew and the Diocesan Museum; the nave itself is free.

12:00

Museo della Carta in the valley above town, uphill from the square. A 13th-century paper mill; entry €3–4.50, no booking.

13:30

Lunch, then something sweet from Pasticceria Pansa: a sfogliatella for €2, or a delizia al limone for €3.50.

15:00

Arsenale della Repubblica, entry €3. Opening hours: 10–19, last entry 18.30 (1 Apr–2 Nov); 10–16.40, last entry 16.10 (3 Nov–31 Mar).

16:30

Marina Grande and the pier until dinner.

Day two: the trail

Pontone, Torre dello Ziro, Atrani

09:00

The climb to Pontone: the Via delle Cartiere, then a steep path of about 750 steps.

10:30

Torre dello Ziro, a viewpoint on the Pontone–Atrani trail. The whole trail takes 2–3 h (full Pontone–Atrani trail), is free and needs no booking.

13:00

Descent into Atrani, then back to Amalfi through the tunnel (5–10 min on foot).

If you would rather spend the second day in the valley than on the viewpoint, the Valle delle Ferriere takes half a day and the waterfall section needs prior registration; you set out from the same Pontone.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

How many days does Amalfi need?

The town fits into one day; the second is for the trail above it. If you use it as a base for the coast, count three to four.

Does anything in Amalfi need booking?

No: the Duomo, the Paper Museum, the Arsenal and the Torre dello Ziro all work without a reservation. Only the waterfall section of the Valle delle Ferriere needs registration.

Do you need transport inside town?

No, the old core is done on foot, uphill and down. You only take a bus for the neighbouring places.
